Ruta Madre (2019) – Storyline

After a painful breakup, Daniel – a young Mexican-American singer – leaves San Diego with a heavy heart. He embarks on an unexpected road trip through Baja, joined by his cynical uncle Rodrigo, who’s also running from his past. Their journey begins at the U.S. Mexico border and winds through Tijuana, Ensenada, Santa Rosalía, and finally reaches their family’s ranch in Ciudad Constitución. Along the way, they encounter a vibrant tapestry of characters – from a hopeful prostitute and a peculiar drug dealer to a friendly witch, holy angels, and stern Federales. Through each surreal and touching encounter, Daniel not only reconnects with his cultural roots but also discovers more about himself.
