In 1849, Karl-Oskar Nilsson and his wife Kristina, along with their four children, left their impoverished life in Småland, Sweden, seeking a better future in America. Their journey is fraught with peril, from the harsh Atlantic crossing to the challenges of settling in the untamed wilderness of Minnesota. Along the way, they encounter fellow travelers like Ulrika, a former prostitute, and Judit, a fellow emigrant, each facing their own struggles and aspirations. As they navigate the trials of their new life, the Nilssons must confront the realities of their decision and the promise of a new beginning.
